Johnson under renewed pressure to scrap National Insurance surcharge

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is under renewed pressure to cancel the NHS and social care National Insurance surcharge after a boost to the public finances.

Buoyant tax revenues for January contributed to a £2.9bn surplus for the month - equal to £5.4bn less borrowing than January 2021 - although last month’s figure was still worse than January 2020 before the pandemic.
