Local government hits out at Dawes

Local government has hit out at its top mandarin after she claimed councils were still sustainable as they only needed to provide statutory services.

Melanie Dawes, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), told the Public Accounts Committee this week the sector is ‘sustainable’ for the remainder of the spending period – meaning councils can meet statutory obligations – and the collapse of another authority is not expected.
