Tesco defends dividends amid rate relief

Retail giant Tesco has defended its decision to pay £900m in dividends despite receiving up to £700m in business rate relief.

The government was earlier asked to rethink its policy of offering all retailers a year-long business rates holiday for 2020/21 after claims the big stores do not need the break due to record sales. The government has promised to reimburse local authorities for the loss of rates.
