Education experts fear the shift to academy schools will open up a democratic deficit, unless local government is handed greater oversight of the sector.

Launched by schools minister David Laws, at the Liberal Democrat Party conference in Brighton this week, fresh research by the Local Government Information Unit (LGiU) forecasts that up to 24,000 academies and free schools would be accountable to the Department for Education by 2015.
