Council leaders have been reminded to stick to government rules on school admissions, after 10 councils broke the admissions code. In his annual report, the chief schools adjudicator, Sir Philip Hunter, identified more than 800 schools and 10 local authorities which had ‘substantially contravened' the code of admissions. The contraventions included not giving the required priority to children in care. Some gave preference to parents who listed the school as first choice, while others did not spell out oversubscription criteria in a form which parents could easily understand. Sir Philip said: ‘I am satisfied all of these points derived from misunderstandings, not from wilful disregard.'
