Guidance on how to deal with migration issues is set to be issued to local authorities, in a bid to improve community integration. A migration advice pack – a joint initiative by the Institute of Community Cohesion and the Department for Local Government and Communities – will be the first stage of the Government's response to the report released last week by the Commission on Integration and Cohesion (CIC). Communities secretary, Ruth Kelly, told The MJ her department wanted a flexible approach by authorities on implementing the recommendations, and would respond formally in the summer. But she confirmed currently no extra resources had been set aside. She said: ‘It's about simple things – providing civic leadership at local level can make a real difference. ‘Councils must think about their communities and how they act in the face of specific challenges that matters.'
