Two senior officers from Alnwick DC will take up second tier roles within the new unitary council for Northumberland. ADC chief executive Bill Batey has confirmed that he will become director of street scene within the new council's place directorate once the authority begins work in April 2009. Batey's second in command at Alnwick, director of environment and regeneration Paul Gee, will also move to the new body as director of regulatory services. Six other second tier posts at UCN have been filled by staff currently employed at Northumberland CC. These include the new director of community safety post, which has been filled by Northumberland's chief fire officer, Brian Hesler. Robin Casson, Northumberland's current director of schools, will assume the same role at the unitary. An interim chief executive has been appointed at North Shropshire DC, which will be scrapped as part of the CLG's plan for nine new unitary bodies next year. A meeting of North Shropshire's council on July 21 confirmed Phillip Thomas as its final chief executive before the establishment of the unitary Shropshire Council. Thomas said his role was ‘to ensure a smooth transition to Shropshire Council' and ‘maintain the value for money services that local residents currently receive'. Meanwhile, Craven DC has confirmed that it intends to appoint a new chief executive on an annual salary of £100,000 – despite calling for a freeze on spending on during the economic downturn. Craven's leader, Chris Knowles-Fitton, said: ‘There are challenging times ahead and despite financial pressures being faced by the council it is essential that we attract the very highest calibre of candidate.' Mr Knowles-Fitton will work alongside Craven's interim chief executive, Brian Dinsdale, to fill the vacant post.
