The rise of the much-criticised ‘career politician' has been laid bare through new figures suggesting that one in seven MPs has never held a job outside Westminster.

According to an analysis into politicians' backgrounds, published in the House of Commons library last week, 90 MPs have never held a significant job outside of the political arena – including 52 Labour MPs, 31 Conservatives, and seven Liberal Democrats.
