A'no-brainer' approach to utilising empty properties

The No Use Empty Kent scheme has led the way for 20 years in bringing houses, shops and business spaces back to life, and news of its success has reached the inbox of the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, says Steve Grimshaw.

W e do our job for the rewards not the awards, but they are always welcome, and this latest one represents something rather special.

Our new silverware (okay, framed certificate) was presented at the Empty Homes Conference in Birmingham this spring. The citation reads: ‘For two decades, No Use Empty (NUE) Kent has stood as a beacon of innovation, persistence, and national leadership in empty homes work. What began as a pilot scheme in 2005 has grown into the UK's longest-running and most successful initiative of its kind, bringing nearly 9,000 properties back into use, unlocking over £160m in public and private investment, and inspiring both national policy interest and replication.
