Ministers have insisted Whitehall is ‘committed to seeing local government reorganisation through' as they announced an April 2029 vesting day for 20 areas.
The decision means reorganisation will effectively be delayed by a year for all two-tier areas apart from Surrey, which has already held shadow elections.
