Staffordshire Police have made a third arrest as part of their investigation into allegations of corruption at Stoke-on-Trent City Council. Businessman Mo Chaudry, owner of the Waterworld aqua park and a member of the North Staffordshire regeneration partnership board, was arrested and bailed by police after questioning on 22 April. It follows the arrests of Stoke's directly-elected mayor, Mark Meredith, and the former leader of the local Conservative group, Roger Ibbs, earlier this year. Mr Meredith, has stood down from political responsibilities at the council while the investigation continues. All three men deny any wrongdoing and have been bailed until June. The police investigation follows an internal inquiry undertaken by officials at Stoke-on-Trent, the findings of which were later referred to the police following the advice of the council's lawyer Wragge and Co. As part of its inquiry, the council looked into an aborted budget proposal to shut a ‘splash pool' at a local leisure centre. Mr Chaudry's lawyer, Robin Swinbank, said: ‘My client's position is that he is entirely happy that his dealings with the council have been completely above board.' Staffordshire Police were keen to stress that nobody has been charged as part of their investigation.
