Expansion plans for Heathrow Airport go against the Government's own pledges on carbon emissions, claims the South East England Regional Assembly. Just a week after climate change protesters scaled the Houses of Parliament, assembly members argue new evidence fails to show the expansion can meet key tests on climate change, transport and noise impact. Assembly chairman Cllr Keith Mitchell CBE said: ‘It's true that Heathrow plays a critical economic role but the assembly is sceptical expansion can be squared with our own and Government's climate change commitments' Support continues to grow for the 2M group campaigning against Heathrow expansion. Camden, Islington and Lambeth LBCs have now joined the 11 councils in and out of London already part of the coalition. Wandsworth LBC leader Edward Lister, speaking on behalf of the 2M Group, said: ‘The fact that three new councils have come on board in such a short space of time shows the scale of opposition that is building.'
