Immigration minister, Damian Green, has been swift to deny MPs' allegations that Whitehall has cleared a backlog of asylum cases by allowing an effective ‘amnesty'.
Mr Green said there was ‘absolutely no amnesty' on asylum-seekers, and argued that the immigration system – infamously referred to as ‘unfit for purpose' by former home secretary, John Reid – was ‘getting better'.
