Britain's Olympic golden girl, Jessica Ennis, has urged Sheffield City Council to save the historic Don Valley Stadium from closure, after the authority said it was under pressure to save £50m this year.

The stadium, built to host the 1991 World Student Games and now the site where heptathlon superstar Ms Ennis trains, has been earmarked for possible closure by the council, which is subject to severe financial constraints due to government cuts.
