The Audit Commission has announced massive cuts in fees for town and parish councils, with almost half having nothing to pay for future inspections.

All councils and other public bodies with an annual income of up to £10,000 will now fall into the watchdog's ‘nil fee' band, as a result of savings made through contracting out the Commission's work to private firms.
