Prolonged public austerity means many bodies from the wider public sector will face financial interventions over the next 12 months, a leading accountant has warned.

Alan Downey, head of pubic sector at KPMG, said senior public managers now feared that financial reserves, which had kept many organisations going throughout 2012, were running out.
