Councils have branded a decision by exam regulator Ofqual to fight a legal battle over English GCSE results as ‘maddening'.

The watchdog responded on 5 October to a pre-action letter sent on behalf of more than 30 local authorities, including Lewisham LBC and Leeds City Council, over the decision by the regulator and two exam bodies to re-draft English GCSE grade boundaries between exams taken in January and this summer.
