Council chiefs have dismissed as 'short-term' the continued offer of Government funded council tax freeze, as the number of local authorities applying for the cash sweetener plummeted by around a quarter on the previous year's uptake.

More than three in five English local authorities (61%) took the government's cash grant to freeze council tax in 2013/14, statistics issued by the DCLG last week indicate.
