The first winner of the Star of Local Government award has been announced by SOLACE. John Schultz, SOLACE president, announced the creation of an award for outstanding contribution to local government in February. This week he declared Professor John Stewart the inaugural winner. Prof Stewart of the University of Birmingham – a regular contributor to The MJ – has been involved in local government for many years in many guises. The award will be presented at the LGA conference in July. Mr Schultz said: ‘We don't do enough to recognise those who make really major contributions to local government. That is why I set up this new award.'
