Council chiefs have suggested the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) should be abolished and its responsibilities devolved locally, The MJ can reveal.

The comments were made in recent roundtable discussions, organised by local government think-tank Localis, with local authority chief executives and leaders representing different tiers from across the country.
