Backing for digital focus on public services

The overwhelming majority of the public feel comfortable with the Government's ambition to make public services 'digital by default', a public spending watchdog has reported.

The overwhelming majority of the public feel comfortable with the Government's ambition to make public services 'digital by default' but just under a fifth of the population (17%) cannot or do not want to go online, a public spending watchdog has reported.

A National Audit Office study on the Government's digital strategy shows 83% of people use the internet, of whom nearly all (93%) are experienced users able to complete online trans-actions without help. However, the auditors advised departments to plan for four million people in England without internet access – who are mainly aged over 65, from lower socio-economic groups or with a disability.
