Education officials have rejected warnings from MPs over the use of private finance to rebuild secondary schools in England. A report by the Commons' education committee warned that ministers should review the £45bn Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme. The programme is the biggest of its kind in more than 50 years but the committee highlighted three cases where schools had been forced to close due to a lack of numbers but councils were still contracted to pay for them. Committee chairman Barry Sheerman gave his support but warned: ‘The question whether BSF is the best way to spend £45bn on education must be kept under regular review.'
