Ministry of Justice proposals to build a large prison in east London have been thrown into doubt, after the capital's assembly urged mayor Boris Johnson to block the plan.
London Assembly members said the proposed prison in south Dagenham ‘showed a lack of ambition' for an area that formed part of the Government's much-heralded Thames Gateway regeneration area.
Assembly members have unanimously backed a motion to oppose the plan. John Biggs AM, said: ‘While we accept there is a need for more prison capacity in London, the lack of consultation about a site in south Dagenham is unacceptable.'
