Former foreign secretary and housing minister, Margaret Beckett, has been appointed to the influential Committee on Standards in Public Life, the Cabinet Office has confirmed.

Former foreign secretary and housing minister, Margaret Beckett, has been appointed to the influential Committee on Standards in Public Life, the Cabinet Office has confirmed.

Ms Beckett, an influential Labour minister under the governments of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, replaces Alun Michael MP, as Labour's nominee on the committee, which operates at arm's length of the Cabinet Office and oversees parliamentary standards – including investigations into alleged misconduct by MPs.
