The number of Scottish council officials topping the £100,000 salary mark has soared by 75% in the past 12 months, according to new figures. A survey by The Scotsman found 58 council officials – including chief executives – in the nation's 32 councils had received salaries in excess of £100,000 in the financial year 2004-05. It also found there had been a 40% increase in the number of council employees earning more than £40,000 a year. There has also been a rise, from 306 to 465, in the number of staff in the £60,000-plus salary band.
