Leaders of England's eight biggest cities, covering a population of 16m, meet next month for the annual core cities summit in Nottingham on 7/8 November. Speakers include Hazel Blears, who will discuss the Treasury sub-national and city regions review produced in July, as well as its author, John Healey, now local government minister. Other speakers are environment secretary, Hilary Benn, Lord Digby Jones and Sir David King, the Government's chief scientific adviser. The eight core cities – Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham and Sheffield, have been dubbed the powerhouses of the country's economy by the Government. The event was originally planned for June but was postponed as it clashed with Gordon Brown's Cabinet reshuffle. Further details from www.glasgows.co.uk/ corecities
