Local government secretary Hazel Blears has called for more women councillors. Writing exclusively in The MJ, Ms Blears highlights the first woman mayor, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, elected at Aldeburgh, Suffolk in November 1908: ‘I am sure she would ask why, a century after she first broke the mould, women are still so under-represented in our town halls.' Ms Blears, promoting International Women's Day on 8 March, calls on female councillors to respond to the Councillors' Commission.
