A major public health concern – rising rates of alcohol abuse – has emerged from an annual ‘state of the city' report into Manchester's wellbeing.

The report, published by Manchester City Council, showed that in 2009/10, alcohol-related hospital admissions in the city were nearly twice the national average – 2,944 per 100,000 compared with 1,743 across England as a whole.
