Want to adopt a common sense approach to Criminal Records Bureau checks? Follow the UK Border Agency and do without.

CRB checks, seemingly the enemy of the Big Society, please nobody. In February, deputy PM Nick Clegg, proposed scaling back the vetting and barring scheme to ‘common sense levels', scrutinising only adults in regular contact with children.

This step drew the ire of former Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Carey, who lamented he'd undergone five checks since stepping down simply to preach.
