Councils in the east of England could lead investment opportunities worth up to £400m from the London 2012 Olympics. Financial analysis by Brentwood BC concluded that authorities in the region could either invite tenders linked to the event, or support local firms bidding for business worth 10% of the £3.8bn gain to the UK economy. The authority argued that as a lead contractor, or by working further down the supply chain as partners, sub-contractors or suppliers, there were significant financial opportunities for councils in the east of England region. Brentwood is the only host borough in Essex, with the mountain biking event taking place in Weald Country Park. The figures were based on a new supplier guide published by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA). Cllr Brandon Lewis, leader of Brentwood BC, said his council was determined to bring a significant financial gain through working with business. ‘The games present unprecedented opportunities for Brentwood, and we want to ensure we work with businesses to ensure opportunities are maximised' he said. The council will be hosting a series of meetings between now and 2012 in order to bring businesses together and assist in this process.'
