A unique initiative in Warrington has given 200 residents access to adult learning opportunities, says Paul Kelly. Providing accessible and high-quality adult learning opportunities which positively impacts on a community is no easy feat. But it's a challenge that Warrington Council's lifelong learning service rose to this year. In just nine months, community cohesion was strengthened thanks to the ‘past, present and future project'. Using a partnership approach to deliver engagement activities across the borough, this unique initiative brought learning to life. It has given more than 200 residents a skills and confidence boost, allowing them to contribute to their local economy and community. In just nine months, Warrington Council believes its learning initiative has brought positive results The project was led by the council's lifelong learning service, whose mission it is to ‘provide quality adult learning opportunities to close the gap between the advantaged and the disadvantaged in our community' and funded by the then Learning and Skills Council. From day centres to libraries, colleges to the Warrington Wolves foundation, a range of partners worked with the council to encourage more people to learn. Warrington residents of all ages engaged in a range of activities including primary school mini-masterpieces, healthy eating, creative cafés and remedies and much more. A large celebratory event was held in spring to recognise the success of the initiative and celebrate the outcomes. Led by the mayor of Warrington, this event showcased impressive artwork, film and prose by individuals involved in adult learning activities, including some of the most vulnerable in the community. The event also marked the launch of a new Lifelong Learning directory, available in libraries and public areas, listing details of adult learning opportunities in Warrington. A steering group oversaw a fair and transparent distribution of funds, developed a strong, strategic partnership and met to share ideas and knowledge of the community. Progression was a key factor of the project, encouraging and supporting residents to take up education, training, employment or volunteering. We reached out into the community to engage new learners, giving adults a second chance to gain the skills needed to get jobs or volunteer. We offered learning opportunities specifically designed for them. From production of DVDs, photos and artwork to the delivery of workshops and short courses, the outcomes have been both significant and substantial. Retired 63-year-old, Carolyn Fisher, took part in a computing course in Sankey Bridges. She said: ‘I've improved my computing skills and made new friends. I've been able to see what else is going on in the community and pick up information so that I can get involved in more. The courses are the best thing that's ever happened for retired people in Warrington.' The project has achieved an increased appreciation of community learning and a commitment to continue expanding opportunities to all sectors of Warrington's communities. Former mayor Cllr Brian Axcell said: ‘The past, present and future project really has brought people together.'
