A Budget eye on council tax

Chancellor Rachel Reeves is considering council tax reform in her upcoming Budget – a move that could reshape how local authorities are funded. Paul Marinko examines what’s on the table and what lessons can be drawn from Wales and Scotland.

Among the deluge of Budget speculation in the national media in recent weeks, rumours that Rachel Reeves may target council tax has accounted for ample column inches.

With the chancellor staring at a financial black hole of anything between £25bn and £50bn, the thought seems to be that she may go for an easy win by adding a couple of extra tax bands onto the top of the system.
