The Budget: A step towards fiscal devo

The Budget took its first steps towards local government finance reform and Total Place 2.0, but did it resolve any of the major issues facing local government? Heather Jameson reports

When chancellor Rachel Reeves stood up in Parliament to deliver her autumn Budget, she did so with a long checklist of political, fiscal, economic and social challenges to solve.

The Budget's core task – to set out the current fiscal envelope alongside tax and spend plans for the coming years – took a backseat to the more pressing issues of placating the Labour backbenches, quelling the rise of Reform UK and avoid tanking further in the opinion polls.
