Say no to new burdens or face apocalypse

Local government will need to prove to the public that there is no more waste, says Heather Jameson. 'But it will also need to step back and stop providing some services and say no to new burdens.'

It is that time of year again – the moment where every council pores over their budget in an effort to squeeze out every last saving, rummaging down the back of the proverbial sofa for any spare change that slipped from the council coffers. 

No one was expecting a big cash bonanza to rescue the sector when the chancellor got up to make her Spring Statement earlier this week – and they weren't disappointed.
