Council leaders have expressed concern at the burden the Comprehensive Area Assessment regime has placed on them during the recession. An LGA poll found that, while councils are working positively with inspectors on the new community-wide inspections, ‘CAA does not represent any lessening of the inspection burden'. The LGA warned: ‘Tight timescales, delays in other inspectorates engaging in the process, failure of Government to put information on the data hub – resulting in repeated requests for the same information and a burdensome use of resources assessment – is placing pressures on councils.' Gareth Davies, Audit Commission managing director of local government, said the first CAA reports will not be published officially until December. He added: ‘CAA is already proving its worth…the new approach has allowed the Commission to provide a real-time assessment of local responses to the recession.
