Streets must be designed for people not cars, according to the Government's urban design adviser. The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) claims streets will only become more civilised places if pedestrians are prioritised over cars. In its new report, Civilised streets, CABE sets out a radical new form of street design which would make them slower, safer and more social, with less signs, less guard rails and more shared space. CABE Space director Sarah Gaventa said: ‘Most streets in this country are failing pedestrians. They need to become destinations again and not simply ways of getting traffic from A to B.'
