A local government stalwart made an OBE for services to local government has taken over the reins at Trafford MBC. Janet Callender will become chief executive of the council in September, following the departure of David McNulty, who took over at Surrey CC earlier this month. Ms Callender joins from neighbouring Tameside MBC, where she has worked for five years. Prior to that, she held both legal and senior managerial posts at Knowsley MBC, from 1989 onwards. Her early career was as a solicitor. Ms Callender said: ‘I feel proud and privileged to have been appointed as Trafford's chief executive. ‘This is a great opportunity for me at this point in my career.' Elsewhere, Barry Rowland has been appointed chief executive at Newcastle City Council. He has been acting chief executive for the last nine months, and has worked at the council for 30 years. He said: ‘It is my dream job and I look forward to working alongside other leaders from across our community.' And Victor Brownlees is the new chief executive at Telford and Wrekin Council. He was previously interim chief executive.
