A capital alliance going beyond the surface

Reducing the risk of disruption across London from surface water flooding is something which must be done across borough boundaries, says Cllr Kieron Williams.

I n July 2021, London faced two devastating storms that flooded over 2,000 properties, causing extensive damage to homes, businesses and critical infrastructure. Beyond the £281m in insurance losses, the floods had a profound human impact – disrupting lives and displacing communities.

Surface water flooding happens when heavy rainfall overwhelms our drainage systems and instead accumulates on roads, flooding homes, disrupting lives and damaging vital local services and infrastructure.
