Good care 'can bring rewards'

Good councils can make a real difference to the lives of young people leaving care, according to Ofsted.

Good councils can make a real difference to the lives of young people leaving care, according to Ofsted.

A new report from schools and social care watchdog entitled Support for care leavers looked at the work of six different local authorities in preparing people for leaving care.

It found services for care leavers was rated good in four authorities, outstanding in one, and satisfactory in the sixth.

However, improvement was still needed by local authorities to provide more housing options, including the provision of emergency accommodation for care leavers.

Ofsted's chief inspector, Christine Gilbert, said: ‘This report shows the difference good local authorities can make to the lives of young people leaving care.'

The councils surveyed, between August and December last year, were Dorset and Suffolk county councils, Richmond LBC, Southampton City Council, Bolton MBC and Knowsley MBC.

* Local government ombudsman, Anne Seex, found ‘comprehensive and spectacular' failures by the former Cheshire CC led to one of its children in care never attending secondary school. Child L has now been awarded £45,000.
