Social workers have warned of an impending crisis after it was revealed councils have made more than 10,000 applications to take children into care this year.

According to official figures from the Children And Family Court Advisory and Support Service (Cafcass), 886 applications were made by local authorities in March, which brought the total to 10,199 over the last 12 months.
