The incoming head of the new combined inspectorate for health, social care and detained mentally-ill patients has pledged ‘not to tear everything up and start again'. The new chair the Care Quality Commission, Baroness Young, has sought to reassure critics ahead of parliamentary votes on whether to establish the new commission, which will oversee the work of all social care directors in local authorities. The commission will amalgamate the Healthcare Commission, the Commission for Social Care Inspection and the Mental Health Act Commission. Baroness Young pledged there would be a ‘common approach to regulation' at the commission because many patients moved across the three sectors and needed ‘seamless care.'
