Unison, local government' largest trade union, has condemned authorities for ‘decimating' careers services at a time when youth unemployment has reached one in five.

Unison researchers suggest that of 144 councils they surveyed, just 15 were maintaining ‘substantial' career services, with Merseyside's councils singled out for cutting services by more than half. At least 50 councils have closed Connexions career advice centres.
