Two out of three cities have seen a rise in the number of public sector jobs, while three-quarters have reported a drop in private sector employment, according to new data from Centre for Cities.
The think-tank's latest research found that just below 40% of cities experienced a net increase in the total number of jobs from 2009 to 2010. Some cities, including Burnley and Birmingham, reported a rise in public sector roles, while others, such as Hull and Swindon, saw numbers fall.
