Censorious censorship

Two Yorkshire parishes have a bit to cover up, or so it seems.

It's been a bad week for town councils with two of them hitting the headlines amid accusations of censorship.

Firstly, Keighley Town Council was accused by Eric Pickles of having ‘lost the plot' after members of the public were ejected by other members of the public who had tried to film a meeting.

Secondly and far importantly, MJ Diary notes that Hebden Royd Town Council has incurred the wrath of the Hebden Bridge Burlesque Festival, after the authority vetoed an event at the Picture House venue.

Festival co-producer, Lizzy Goodman, who also runs the splendidly-named Frou Frou Burlesque and Cabaret in the town, told local reporters: ‘Not for a moment did we expect that we would be refused on moral grounds, especially in a venue that regularly stages stand-up comedy and 18-certificate films.

‘It seems that some members of the town council are not as liberal as they would have us believe, which is such a shame, since the town has a reputation for being one of the most tolerant and inclusive places to live in the UK.'
