The LGA was set up with an inbuilt bias towards metropolitan / urban authority areas. Even though, at this juncture in the electoral cycle, the Tories control over 50% of all GB Local Authorities they cannot be sure of mustering a majority vote. An almost opaque system of proportionality is applied This interesting little graph shows an electoral cycle over a 16 year period (1995 - 2011)& by any reasonable measure the Conservative Party ought to have control of the LGA.Who ever wins the chairmanship in the summer does need to address this issue - just as the Government is addressing the unfair parliamentary constituency boundary issue where in dozens of seats MP's representing urban areas require fewer votes to get elected than those who represent rural areas. The irony is that the LGA currently has more influence with Government than it does with its own member Authorities.
