Unattractive council jobs have seen a huge increase in applications, due to the downturn. Growing levels of competition for work has led to one advert for a bin vehicle loader at Havant BC – with a salary of £14,000 – to receive 238 applications. Similar jobs which have received more than 100 responses include roles in warehouses and for van drivers, data entry and security. Figures released last week showed unemployment has risen to its highest level since Labour came to power in 1997.
