The future of Mid Devon DC's chief executive appears to be hanging in the balance. Rumours began circulating last week that Paul Edwards was about to resign, after he reportedly announced it at a members' briefing the week before. Speculation was quickly scotched by an official council denial, only to be followed hours later by a statement from Mr Edwards in which he said he was ‘in negotiation with the council regarding my contract'. A council spokeswoman told The MJ: ‘It's too delicate a matter to discuss but there will be a press statement in due course.' The hung council's resources committee vice-chairman, Cllr Bill Dixon, said: ‘Nothing is decided. It is dependent on a meeting to held on 4 December. A couple of proposals have been put forward and a recommendation will then go to full council on 13 December.' Mr Edwards joined the authority in 2001 after leaving Boston BC, where he was director of development. In recent months his tenure has been beset by problems. In June, the council was rated as ‘weak' in a CPA, which criticised its leadership. Now the council has come under fire for the way it handled an attempted transfer of housing stock.
