The citizen should be at the heart of public services, according to think-tank, the Local Government Information Unit (LGiU). The LGiU has launched a consultation on local accountability, to refocus public services towards the citizen. The paper proposes a single commissioning process for all local public services to empower councils as the only democratic local body and strengthen accountability. LGiU policy analyst, Amelia Cookson, said: ‘Ministers promised devolution of power – and if they meant what they said, we need to start seeing the practical steps that will make this a reality.'
