Glasgow City Council has launched plans to set up a limited liability partnership (LLP) to run its direct and care services. The council's executive committee has agreed to develop a business plan to look at how much of the department would move to the LLP. The department currently has 8,000 staff, who provide a wide range of services, including home care, cleaning and catering. The move comes after a review of the service, which came up with 10 possible options for future service delivery options. ‘Our review was quite clear,' said council leader Steven Purcell. ‘If we were to protect the jobs of our employees and ensure continuation of services, then doing nothing was not an option. If no action was taken by the council, it's likely that we would have been forced to put these services out to competition, and winning contracts would be very difficult. ‘We have already established a number of similar, arm's-length companies in Glasgow, such as City Building, Culture and Sport Glasgow, and Glasgow Community and Safety Services,' added Cllr Purcell.
