Liverpool City Council votes to alter its constitution, bypassing a planned referendum.

Liverpool City Council has voted to alter its constitution, bypassing a planned referendum and enabling the direct election of a city mayor to take place alongside local elections on 3 May.

Last week, councillors voted by 62 to three – with 13 abstentions – to approve the switch to a directly-elected mayor, which follows Liverpool brokering the first ‘city deal' with ministers.
